It's worth taking a look at the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence. They launched in October and will coordinate research and exchange of theories about what works and what doesn't in looking at collective intelligence. The directore of the center defines CI thus: groups of individuals doing things that seem intelligent. That includes everything from ant colonies, to wikipedia to the neurons in one brain.   more »
